Steps to Writing:
  1. Planning

  • start with an Angle
  • Brainstorm Angle, sources, settings, situations
  • Planning - arrange the interview (face to face) and plan the questions
  • Preparing - create starter questions : 1. Open-Ended Question, 2. Follow-up Question, 3. Direct Information Question, 4. Yes-No Question, 5. Forced-Choice Question, Telling-Back Question
  • Follow the Rules for Successful Interviewing (interviewing etiquette)
  • Writing should be Circular: Opening, Body, Conclusion
  • Write the Opening and Closing first in order to maintain consistency and focus, then go back and write the body
  1. Opening: set the mood and tone of the story
  2. Closing: bring the story full circle (show subject in the same setting as the opening, revealing change or growth
  3. write the body - fill in the details with a quotation, transition, explanation structure
  • Writing should include sensory details - SHOW don't TELL
  • Include all six senses:
  1. sight
  2. sound
  3. touch
  4. taste
  5. smell
  6. emotion (necessary to create empathy)
  • Revise - ensure unity and flow, eliminate irrelevant details, correct style and grammar/mechanics issues, MAINTAIN Human Interest aspect
